Amun's Tazmanian Devil x CH Cin-Jas Annie's Star of Hope Shane is my heart dog. He was my first show dog, and he taught me more than I ever could have taught him. He's a natural showman, and loves the ring. His sparkling personality cannot be ignored. He is also a real ham and the world's best beggar; He puts on the most clownish show when it looks like you've got something tasty. Showing you his small front "teefs" is one that cracks me up every time, so it's a regular trick. Shane is pointed in Canada, but I never bothered to finish him. He began his show "career" there as a 5 year old with a Best of Breed win over younger competition. Other priorities in my life came up, and I failed to continue with him there. Shane is currently in swim therapy at La Paw Spa, because he has been diagnosed with CIDD, Canine Intervertebral Disc Disease. He has 5 discs in his lower back which are being compressed. This causes them to bulge and put pressure on his spinal cord. Potentially disastrous, we've adjusted our home, and our lives to accommodate him. Recently our orthopedic surgeon said that Shane was looking excellent, and that at this time surgery should not be necessary. I attribute this in a large part to his swim therapy. It allows him to exercise (keeping fit and trim is of utmost importance with CIDD) and stretch with no impact to his back and joints. Warm water massage is also beneficial. CIDD can be genetic, congenital or caused by injury. We're not sure if Shane had a pre-existing condition but problems began after Booboo collided with him at top speed while running in the yard. She hit him so hard that she unintentionally "bit" him - the gash required 3 stitches. Incidentally the point of contact was the same location as the most damaged of his discs. A week later he fell off the couch. When he seemed to have continuing sensitivity after another week, I knew we had a more serious problem than just a pulled muscle. The rest, as they say, is history. I hope to have Shane back out in the veterans classes next summer at the EBC specialty show, if our good progress continues.
