Good bye my love.

Shane, you were the best dog anyone ever could have hoped to have. You taught me so much about dogs, dog training and dog showing. When I took you to dog shows, I barely even needed to be there. I held up your number and kept your lead from dragging. I held your bait and loved you when we left, whether we won or not. When we lost I knew I had still won: I got to go home with you. And when we won you knew already what others had recognized.

You always knew you were the man. You were fearless, bold and so full of yourself. Every day was your day. You had an opinion on everything and we all knew about it. You were smart and handsome and a good leader. Despite being an assertive guy you were tolerant and willing to accept other adult dogs into your home.

You had so much more potential than I ever actualized and I’m sorry for that. Lure coursing wasn’t your thing: why bother with a plastic bag when there were birds and butterflies to chase? But you were willing to meet any challenge I set before you. You were intense and focused and such a “Basenji”. If I had realized how fun training was when you were young and vibrant I have no doubt you would have had more letters after your name than you did in front. Not that it would have mattered: you were awesome exactly as you were.

I miss you so much.
